Bengaluru Techie Arrested for Extortion Threats to Ayushmann Khurrana and Tusshar Kapoor in Lawrence Bishnoi Gang's Name

The Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested a Bengaluru-based information technology engineer for allegedly sending extortion threats to Bollywood actors Ayushmann Khurrana and Tusshar Kapoor while falsely claiming links to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.

The arrest, made in Bengaluru after an intensive technical investigation, appears to have brought a swift end to a scare that gripped sections of the film industry this week, and police say the accused has no connection whatsoever with the gang whose name he used.

The accused has been identified as Vaibhav Mishra, a 30-year-old IT professional from Bengaluru. According to Mumbai Police sources, Mishra had been targeting several film personalities living in Mumbai over the past few days, sending threatening audio messages and emails while posing as an associate of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and demanding large sums of money.

He was taken into custody by the Mumbai Crime Branch in Bengaluru, following an investigation led by the Crime Branch and cyber cell units. Police have clarified that Mishra is not linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, and officers suspect he was taking advantage of the fear generated by the gang's name to extort money from celebrities.

The threats came to light in quick succession. On Tuesday, actor Tusshar Kapoor reportedly received a threatening audio message from a caller identifying himself as Harry Boxer, who claimed to be a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and demanded Rs 5 crore from the actor. Kapoor reported the call to Mumbai Police immediately, and the case was handed over to the Anti-Extortion Cell and the Crime Branch.

The Crime Branch's technical team examined the audio recording and compared it with official voice samples of Harry Boxer available in its database. Senior police sources said the voice samples did not match, strengthening suspicion that the caller was impersonating a gang member to threaten the actor and extort money.

A day later, on Wednesday, actor Ayushmann Khurrana received a threatening audio message from a person claiming links to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and demanding crores of rupees, according to Mumbai Police sources. The police began matching the audio clip received by the actor with the voice of a person already present in police records, and an investigation was launched to identify the individual behind the messages.

Initial reports said no first information report had been registered at that stage, but the investigation moved quickly, and within hours the trail led to Bengaluru and to Mishra's arrest. According to police sources, Mishra had also sent similar threatening messages to several other Bollywood celebrities, suggesting a pattern rather than an isolated incident.

Officers quoted in the press offered a telling explanation for the accused's methods. One officer said that Mishra appeared to have tried to take advantage of the fear of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang that had been generated in the aftermath of a firing incident involving actor Tiger Shroff last month.

That incident, in Mumbai's Juhu area on October 18, saw shots fired outside premises linked to the actor, and members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang subsequently claimed responsibility. Police have named jailed gangster Bishnoi's aide, Anil Pandit, as a wanted accused in that case, and so far 13 people, including the alleged shooters, have been arrested.

Against that background, a threat invoking the gang's name carries a particular menace, which is precisely why, police believe, the accused chose to use it.

The episode highlights a troubling pattern in which the names of notorious gangs are borrowed by impostors to create panic and extort money. For the victims, the distinction between a genuine gang threat and a hoax is almost impossible to make in the moment. A threatening message demanding crores, arriving out of the blue and invoking a gang with a record of violent crime, is terrifying regardless of who sent it.

That is why the police response in such cases focuses first on assessing the credibility of the threat through technical means, such as voice analysis, and then on tracing the sender, even as the investigation into the underlying gang activity continues separately.

The role of technology in the case is also noteworthy. The Crime Branch's ability to compare audio samples with its database, to trace messages through technical investigation, and to locate the accused in another city within a short time, shows how cyber and technical units have become central to modern policing. The arrest in Bengaluru, far from the Mumbai addresses of the victims, underlines that extortion threats today are not constrained by geography.

A message sent from a laptop or a phone in one city can terrorise a victim in another, and only technical investigation can close that distance.

For Bollywood, the episode is the latest in a series of security scares that have raised concerns about the safety of celebrities in Mumbai. The firing incident involving Tiger Shroff last month, and the threats to Kapoor and Khurrana this week, have combined to create an atmosphere of anxiety in the industry.

Police have sought to reassure the public that each case is being investigated on its merits, and that the arrest of Mishra shows that threats, even those made anonymously and from another city, will be traced. At the same time, the investigation continues, with further interrogation of the accused underway to establish the full extent of his activities and whether others were involved.

There are also legal questions that will follow. Extortion, criminal intimidation and impersonation are serious offences, and the use of a gang's name to create fear can attract additional charges. The fact that the accused allegedly targeted multiple celebrities could also weigh in the case against him.

For now, though, the immediate outcome is clear: two actors who received frightening threats this week now know that the person behind them is in custody, and that police say he acted alone and without any gang connection.

The case serves as a reminder of how quickly fear can be manufactured in the digital age, and how a notorious name, borrowed by an impostor, can do much of the work of intimidation on its own. It also shows the other side of that coin: that technical investigation, voice analysis and inter-city police coordination can unmask such impostors quickly. For Ayushmann Khurrana, Tusshar Kapoor and the other celebrities who received messages, the arrest brings a measure of relief.

For the police, it is a warning that the misuse of gang names for extortion is a trend that will need continued vigilance, long after this particular case has closed.
