Blast at Ghaziabad Police Outpost Injures Food Delivery Worker; ATS and Forensic Teams Join Probe

A powerful explosion at a police outpost in Ghaziabad late on Friday night left a 20-year-old food delivery worker injured and triggered a full-scale investigation involving the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad, forensic experts and a bomb disposal squad, as police worked on Saturday to establish what caused the blast.

The explosion occurred at around nine in the night at the Vasundhara police outpost, which falls under the Indirapuram police station in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. The blast damaged the outpost's air-conditioning unit, cracked its walls and shattered its window panes, and sent a wave of panic through the surrounding locality.

The injured man has been identified as Vishal, a 20-year-old food delivery executive and a resident of Arthala in Ghaziabad. He had arrived at the outpost to deliver an order when the explosion took place. A sub-inspector was inside the outpost with him at the time, and the delivery had been placed for the officer in charge of the post.

Vishal was struck on the head by a piece of glass from a shattered window pane. He was rushed to a private hospital in the Surya Nagar area for treatment, where doctors said his condition was stable. No police personnel were injured in the incident, officials said.

The intensity of the blast was such that it blew out the glass panels of the outpost's windows and left the air-conditioning unit blackened. Visuals from the site showed the damaged unit and the debris scattered around the small building. The explosion did not trigger a fire at the outpost, officials confirmed.

Police called in the field unit, the bomb disposal squad and the fire department soon after the blast to examine the site and establish its cause. A team from the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad, along with forensic experts, also inspected the outpost on Saturday, collecting samples and physical evidence from the scene. The samples have been sent to Agra for forensic examination.

The exact cause of the explosion has not yet been established, and the accounts emerging from the early investigation point in different directions. The Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Trans Hindon zone told reporters that, prima facie, a blast in the air-conditioning unit was suspected. He said the outpost was an old structure, and investigators were examining whether a passing sewer line or a gas pipeline in the vicinity could have contributed to the incident.

"It is an old outpost, and the exact cause is still not known. We are trying to find out. We are trying to check any passing sewer line or gas pipeline in case they may have resulted in the incident," the officer said. He also made it clear that the explosion was not linked to any explosive substance.

Preliminary investigations supported that assessment. Police said on Saturday that no traces of explosive material, gunpowder or chemical residue had been found at the site. That finding, however, has not closed the inquiry. Some police sources were quoted as saying that an explosion in the air-conditioning compressor did not appear to be the cause either, leaving the reason for the blast an open question.

The involvement of the Anti-Terrorism Squad has added another dimension to the probe. The squad's teams were called in as a precaution, given that the blast took place inside a police establishment, and investigators said all angles remained open. Police also said they were verifying a social media post in which an organisation claimed responsibility for the blast.

The claim has not been verified, and officials stressed that the investigation would include examining every possibility before reaching a conclusion.

The incident has drawn attention because it comes at a time when security agencies across northern India are on alert after a series of explosions in the region in recent days. In Rajasthan, a blast on a railway track near the Pakistan border and an explosion at a warehouse in Nagaur have also been under investigation, and the Union railway minister has said that the conspiracy behind the Sri Ganganagar railway blast will be uncovered.

The Ghaziabad blast, however, stands apart in that the police's own early findings point away from an explosive device, with the focus instead on a possible technical or structural failure in an ageing building.

The Vasundhara outpost is a small police post in a densely populated residential area of Indirapuram, one of the busiest parts of Ghaziabad, which sits on the eastern edge of Delhi. Such outposts serve as the first point of contact between the police and the public in their localities, handling day-to-day complaints and maintaining a visible presence on the ground.

The blast has raised questions about the condition of such ageing police buildings, many of which were built decades ago and now house modern electrical equipment, including air-conditioning units that run for long hours.

Air-conditioner explosions, while uncommon, are not unknown in India, particularly during the summer months when compressors are under heavy load. Investigators will be looking at the age and maintenance record of the unit at the Vasundhara outpost, as well as the electrical wiring of the building, as part of their effort to pin down the cause.

The possibility of a gas leak from a nearby pipeline is also being examined, since a build-up of gas in an enclosed space can produce a blast of the kind reported at the outpost.

For the residents of the area, the explosion was a frightening experience. People in the neighbourhood heard a loud bang late in the evening and rushed out of their homes to find the police outpost damaged and glass strewn across the ground. Police teams moved in quickly to cordon off the area and begin their examination, and senior officers arrived at the scene through the night.

Vishal's family, meanwhile, has been at the hospital where he is being treated. His injuries, though not life-threatening, have underlined the risks faced by delivery workers, who spend their working hours moving through the city late into the night. The food delivery business in the National Capital Region operates around the clock, and its workers routinely enter homes, offices and public buildings, including police posts, at all hours.

The police said the investigation would continue until the cause of the blast was established with certainty. Forensic reports from Agra, the findings of the bomb disposal squad and the technical examination of the air-conditioning unit and the building's gas and sewer lines are all expected to feed into the final assessment. Until then, officials have urged the public not to speculate about the cause of the explosion.

The outpost itself remained cordoned off on Saturday as the investigation continued, with police personnel standing guard and forensic teams carrying out their work inside. Normal functioning at the post is expected to resume only after the examination of the site is complete and the building is declared safe.
