Jailer 2 Crosses Rs 500 Crore in India as Rajinikanth's Blockbuster Marches Toward Rs 800 Crore Worldwide

Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 has crossed another major milestone at the box office, surpassing Rs 500 crore in gross collections in India within 15 days of its release and pushing its worldwide gross past Rs 765 crore. The film, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures, is now the highest-grossing Tamil film of all time globally, and it has become only the second Tamil film ever to cross the Rs 500 crore gross mark in India.

With its third weekend ahead and trade watchers eyeing the Rs 800 crore mark worldwide, the sequel's run has already secured its place in Tamil cinema history.

On its 15th day, the third Thursday of its run, Jailer 2 collected Rs 5.90 crore net at the domestic box office from 10,313 shows across India. The original Tamil version contributed the most, earning Rs 3.20 crore from 4,462 shows, followed by the Telugu version with Rs 1.40 crore from 1,665 shows, the Hindi version with Rs 1.10 crore from 3,972 shows, and the Kannada version with Rs 20 lakh from 214 shows.

The day's earnings represented a decline from the previous day, a normal pattern for a weekday in the third week, but the film's hold remained strong, with more than 10,000 shows still running across the country.

With the day-15 collections, the film's total India net collection reached Rs 429.55 crore, while its India gross collection stood at Rs 502.65 crore. Overseas, the film added Rs 2 crore on its 15th day, taking its cumulative overseas gross to Rs 262.50 crore. Combined, the worldwide gross collection reached Rs 765.15 crore in 15 days.

The film also recorded 479,990 footfalls on day 15, taking its total footfalls across India to more than 2.88 crore, a figure that underlines the sheer scale of its theatrical audience.

The Rs 500 crore domestic gross milestone puts Jailer 2 in rare company. The only other Tamil film to achieve the feat was also a Rajinikanth sequel: S Shankar's 2018 science-fiction action epic 2.0, the follow-up to the actor's 2010 blockbuster Enthiran, which amassed Rs 519 crore gross at the domestic box office. Jailer 2 has now gone further globally, surpassing 2.0's lifetime worldwide collection of Rs 691 crore to become the highest-grossing Tamil film ever worldwide.

Trade analysts have noted that the film may still fall short of Rs 1,000 crore worldwide, a milestone that once looked within reach, but its position at the top of Tamil cinema's all-time chart is already secure.

The comparison with 2.0 also highlights one of the most discussed aspects of Jailer 2's run: its Hindi release. While 2.0 enjoyed a wide Hindi release, aided by the presence of Akshay Kumar as its chief antagonist, and collected a massive Rs 225 crore gross from its dubbed Hindi version, Jailer 2 has had a compromised Hindi release owing to disagreements with leading multiplex chains PVR INOX and Cinepolis over the film's four-week window before a streaming release.

As a result, the film found a release only in secondary national multiplex chains and single screens across northern India, and its Hindi version has earned around Rs 54.75 crore gross in 15 days, roughly one-fifth of 2.0's Hindi total. That most of its business has come from the Tamil and Telugu versions makes the worldwide total all the more remarkable.

Jailer 2 has also set a record that speaks to its breadth across regions. According to trade reports, it has become the first Tamil film to cross the Rs 50 crore gross mark in all five major territories: Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh-Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and the Hindi belt. It is only the fourth Indian film overall to accomplish that feat, after Baahubali 2, KGF 2 and Kantara Chapter 1.

The achievement reflects a pan-Indian appeal that few Tamil films have managed, and it has been driven by strong performances in every language version rather than by a single market alone.

The film's opening weeks explain much of its success. Jailer 2 collected Rs 334.35 crore net during its first week, followed by Rs 95.55 crore in its second week, giving it an exceptionally strong base before it entered its third week. The sequel to Rajinikanth's 2023 blockbuster Jailer, the film also stars Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, S J Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty and Vidya Balan, with cameos by Mohanlal, Shivarajkumar, Jackie Shroff and Hrithik Roshan.

The combination of a beloved franchise, a star cast spanning several film industries and Nelson Dilipkumar's action-comedy treatment has kept audiences returning even as weekday collections have eased.

The run is not over yet. Trade watchers predicted a massive third weekend for the film ahead of the Diwali releases taking over screens, and live updates showed the film continuing to add collections into its 17th day, with its India gross moving past Rs 510 crore.

Analysts have expressed surprise at the film's extraordinary footfall numbers and have predicted that it will emerge as the all-time number one film in terms of footfalls across popular, major and iconic theatre centres in Tamil Nadu by a huge margin. Whether it reaches Rs 800 crore worldwide will depend on how it holds against new Diwali releases, but the film has already exceeded most expectations.

All box office figures are trade estimates compiled from public and industry sources, and they may change as official studio data is updated or as additional international market reports are finalised. That caveat applies to every major release, and Jailer 2 is no exception.

What is not in doubt is the scale of the achievement: a Tamil sequel, released with a compromised Hindi footprint, has become the biggest Tamil grosser in history within just over two weeks, powered by packed houses in its home markets and a diaspora audience overseas.

For Rajinikanth, whose career has spanned five decades, it is another landmark in a filmography that continues to set records, and for Tamil cinema, it is a reminder of the theatrical audience that still turns out in force for a true big-screen event.

The film's success also reinforces the value of the sequel as a format in Indian cinema: audiences returned in large numbers for characters and a world they already knew, and the makers rewarded that familiarity with a larger canvas, a wider cast and action set pieces designed for the biggest screens available.
