Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer 2 has become the highest-grossing Tamil film of all time, crossing the Rs 700 crore mark worldwide within 11 days of its release and surpassing the lifetime collection of the superstar's own earlier blockbuster 2.0.
The film achieved the milestone on Sunday, its eleventh day in theatres, ending the day with a worldwide gross collection of Rs 710.35 crore, according to trade tracker Sacnilk. The previous record holder, 2.0, starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar, had earned approximately Rs 691 crore during its theatrical run. Jailer 2 has now moved past that figure with its theatrical run still going strong.
In India, the action drama earned Rs 25.70 crore on Sunday, taking its total domestic gross collection to Rs 466.85 crore, while its net collection in the country stands at Rs 398.70 crore. The overseas gross has reached Rs 243.50 crore, after the film collected Rs 10 crore from international markets on its eleventh day. The combination of a robust domestic performance and a strong overseas showing has carried the film past the record in less than a fortnight.
The language-wise break-up for Sunday underlines the film's breadth. The Tamil version contributed Rs 17.35 crore from 5,683 shows, the Telugu version added Rs 4.50 crore across 1,860 shows, the Hindi version collected Rs 3.15 crore from 4,195 shows, and the Kannada version contributed Rs 70 lakh from 216 shows.
The film's second weekend collection in India has been estimated at Rs 64.35 crore net, a figure that points to sustained footfall well beyond the opening weekend frenzy.
Jailer 2, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures, released in theatres on October 15 with Rajinikanth returning in the role of Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. The sequel to the 2023 hit Jailer features an ensemble cast including Ramya Krishnan, Mohanlal, Vidya Balan, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Mithun Chakraborty, Hrithik Roshan, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff, a line-up that has helped the film draw audiences across linguistic markets.
The film's record-breaking run began from its opening weekend itself. Jailer 2 became the fastest Tamil film to cross the Rs 300 crore mark worldwide, achieving the feat in just three days, and the fastest to surpass Rs 400 crore, doing so on its fourth day. It has now added the title of the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2026 to its list of achievements, alongside the all-time record.
Director Nelson Dilipkumar had earlier reacted to the film's record-breaking box office performance on social media, writing that theatres were going bonkers and that the audience's love and reception had been phenomenal. His message captured the celebratory mood in cinemas, where fans have turned screenings into events, cheering the superstar's entry and mass moments in a tradition that has long defined Rajinikanth's releases.
The new record also reshuffles the list of the highest-grossing Tamil films worldwide. Jailer 2 now leads with Rs 710.35 crore, followed by 2.0 at Rs 691 crore, Vijay's Leo at Rs 605.90 crore, the first Jailer at Rs 604.75 crore and Coolie at Rs 518 crore. That Rajinikanth now headlines the top two films on the list, and three of the top five counting the original Jailer, underlines his enduring dominance at the Tamil box office across different phases of his career.
Trade observers note that the film's success rests on more than star power alone. The sequel built on the goodwill of the first Jailer, retained its core appeal while expanding its scale, and released across a wide footprint that allowed dubbed versions to contribute meaningfully. The Hindi version's steady collections, in particular, show how Tamil blockbusters with strong action and mass appeal are increasingly finding audiences beyond their home market.
It is worth remembering that box office figures of this kind are trade estimates, compiled by trackers such as Sacnilk from theatre reports and industry sources, and they may be revised as further collections are reported. Producers do not always publish official figures, and different trackers can vary slightly in their totals.
Even allowing for that margin, the scale of Jailer 2's achievement is not in doubt: a worldwide gross beyond Rs 710 crore in 11 days places it in a league of its own among Tamil releases.
The film's run also arrives at a healthy moment for Tamil cinema, which has seen several large-scale releases perform strongly this year. For exhibitors, a film that sustains collections into its second week, with strong Sunday numbers and a solid second weekend, is as valuable as a record opening, because it keeps screens occupied and audiences returning. Jailer 2 has delivered on both counts, opening huge and holding well.
For Rajinikanth, the milestone adds another chapter to a career that has repeatedly rewritten box office history. From the record-breaking runs of his earlier films to the global success of 2.0, the superstar has remained Tamil cinema's biggest box office draw for decades.
That a sequel released when he is well into the fifth decade of his career should now stand as the highest-grossing Tamil film of all time is a testament both to his longevity and to the loyalty of an audience that continues to turn out in force.
As Jailer 2 moves into its third week, the question now is not whether it will extend its record, but by how much. With collections still strong on its eleventh day and no major competing release immediately crowding it out, the film has room to push its worldwide total further. Whatever the final figure, its place in Tamil cinema history is already secure.
The overseas figure deserves emphasis of its own. An overseas gross of Rs 243.50 crore means that more than a third of the film's worldwide total has come from outside India, a sign of how far Tamil cinema's reach now extends through diaspora audiences and dubbed releases. That international pull, combined with strong domestic numbers across four language versions, is what separates a large regional hit from an all-time record holder.
Trade watchers will also note the shape of the run. A film that opens huge and then fades quickly can still post a large total, but Jailer 2 has done something harder: it has held its audience into a second weekend, posted a strong Sunday on its eleventh day, and continued to draw full houses in its home market while dubbed versions added steadily.
That pattern of sustained footfall is what allows a record to keep growing rather than stalling after the opening rush, and it is why the final total, whenever the run ends, is likely to sit well above the Rs 710 crore mark already reached.
