Jailer 2 Crosses Rs 800 Crore Worldwide In 18 Days, Becomes First Tamil Film To Reach Milestone

Rajinikanth's action sequel Jailer 2 has crossed Rs 800 crore at the worldwide box office in just 18 days, becoming the first Tamil film to reach that milestone and consolidating its position as the second-highest-grossing Indian film of 2026.

The film, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures, reached a global total of Rs 807.25 crore after a strong Sunday performance, according to industry tracker Sacnilk, whose figures were reported by multiple outlets on Monday.

The breakthrough came on Sunday, November 1, the film's 18th day in theatres. On that day, the film collected Rs 11.20 crore in domestic net earnings in India, a rise of 15.5 per cent over the previous day's collection of Rs 9.70 crore. The Sunday surge was decisive: it pushed the worldwide total past the Rs 800 crore mark, with international circuits contributing Rs 3 crore on the day alone to nudge the film over the line.

The performance was spread across 8,906 shows nationwide, with an overall occupancy of 25.9 per cent, indicating that audience interest remained strong well into the third week.

The breakdown of the Day 18 figures shows how the film's appeal is distributed across languages and regions. The original Tamil version remained the largest contributor, earning Rs 8 crore from 4,287 screenings on Sunday. The Hindi version added Rs 1.75 crore from 3,592 shows, while the Telugu version collected Rs 1 crore and the Kannada version contributed Rs 45 lakh.

That distribution reflects the film's release strategy, which saw it open in Tamil, Hindi, Kannada and Telugu on October 15, 2026, and its subsequent performance in each market. Tamil Nadu has been the strongest territory, with the film becoming the first Rajinikanth film to cross Rs 200 crore gross in his home state, according to trade reports.

By the end of Day 18, the worldwide total of Rs 807.25 crore was made up of Rs 533.75 crore gross in India and Rs 273.50 crore from overseas markets. The domestic net collection stood at Rs 456.30 crore. The distinction between net and gross is important in box office reporting: net figures are calculated after entertainment taxes, while gross figures include those taxes.

On either measure, the film's performance is remarkable for a Tamil-language production, because it has achieved a scale that was previously associated mainly with Hindi-language blockbusters or with the largest pan-Indian releases.

The milestone also carries historical significance for Tamil cinema. Jailer 2 has now overtaken Rajinikanth's own earlier film 2.0, which had been the benchmark for Tamil films both in India and worldwide. In India, Jailer 2's gross of Rs 533.75 crore has moved past 2.0's lifetime India gross of Rs 519 crore, making it the highest-grossing Tamil film ever at the Indian box office.

Worldwide, it has moved well past 2.0's total of Rs 691 crore, and it has also set a new record for overseas performance by a Tamil film, with its overseas gross of Rs 273.50 crore far exceeding 2.0's overseas haul of about Rs 172 crore. Trade analysts have noted that the film is now the first Tamil project to breach Rs 800 crore globally, a threshold that marks a new chapter for the industry.

The film's journey to that point has not been a straight line. It opened with a net collection of Rs 59.70 crore in India on its first day and collected Rs 334.35 crore in its first week, before experiencing a decline in its second week, when it earned Rs 95.55 crore.

Daily collections then fell further during the weekdays, with Friday's collection at Rs 5.50 crore, before recovering on Saturday to Rs 9.35 crore or Rs 9.70 crore, depending on the tracker update, and then rising again on Sunday.

That pattern, a strong opening, a mid-run dip, and a weekend recovery in the third week, is not unusual for a large release, but the scale of the Sunday rebound in the third week is what allowed the film to cross Rs 800 crore sooner than some observers had expected.

By Day 17, the film had already reached a worldwide total of Rs 790.85 crore, with an India gross of Rs 520.35 crore and an India net of Rs 444.75 crore. At that stage, it had also become the second-highest-grossing Indian film of 2026, behind Dhurandhar: The Revenge, according to trade reports. The Day 18 surge did not change that ranking, but it did widen the gap over other contenders and set a new benchmark for Tamil cinema's international footprint.

Analysts now ask whether weekday footfalls can push the total past Rs 850 crore, with strong theatre attendance through week three expected to decide the final lifetime figure.

The film's overseas performance deserves particular attention, because it accounts for about 34 per cent of the worldwide total, a higher share than is typical for many Indian blockbusters. By Day 17, the film had collected Rs 270.50 crore from overseas markets in just 17 days, overtaking KGF Chapter 2, which ended its overseas run with approximately Rs 214.15 crore, and placing it among the top six highest-grossing South Indian films overseas.

It was also fast approaching the overseas lifetime collection of Pushpa 2: The Rule, which stands at around Rs 271 crore, and by Day 18 it had moved past that figure. The contrast with Pushpa 2 is instructive: that film dominated the domestic market, collecting about Rs 1,234 crore net in India, with a gross of Rs 1,471 crore, but its overseas share was only about 15.6 per cent of its worldwide total of Rs 1,742 crore.

Jailer 2, by contrast, has relied more heavily on international audiences, which reflects both Rajinikanth's global fan base and the growing reach of Tamil cinema abroad.

Within India, the film has also set records for language-wise performance. It is reported to be the first Indian film to cross Rs 75 crore gross in each of the four major southern markets: Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada. That breadth is significant because it shows that the film's appeal is not confined to Tamil Nadu, even though Tamil remains its strongest market.

The Hindi version's contribution, in particular, indicates that the film has found an audience beyond its core linguistic base, a factor that has become increasingly important for large Indian releases seeking to maximise their box office potential.

The film itself is a sequel to the 2023 hit Jailer, with Rajinikanth returning as retired jailer Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. It is directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, produced by Kalanithi Maran of Sun Pictures, and features music by Anirudh Ravichander. The ensemble cast reported for the film includes Mohanlal, Hrithik Roshan, Vidya Balan, S.J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Yogi Babu and Ramya Krishnan, among others.

The scale of the cast, combined with Rajinikanth's star power, has been cited as a factor in the film's ability to draw audiences across regions and age groups, even as newer releases compete for screens.

Looking ahead, the question for Jailer 2 is not whether it will be remembered as a major success, because that is already settled, but how far it can go from here. With Ramayana slated for release on November 5, the film will face fresh competition for screens and audience attention, and its daily collections declined during the second week before the third-weekend recovery.

That suggests that the Rs 1,000 crore club, which some fans had hoped for, may prove challenging, as trade reports have noted. The more immediate target, Rs 850 crore, appears within reach if weekday attendance holds up, and any further milestones will depend on how the film performs once the new release arrives.

For Tamil cinema, however, the significance of the Rs 800 crore milestone extends beyond a single film's lifetime total. It demonstrates that a Tamil-language film can achieve a global scale previously thought to be the preserve of Hindi or large pan-Indian productions, and it sets a new benchmark for future Tamil releases.

It also underscores the importance of overseas markets, where diaspora audiences and growing interest in South Indian cinema have created a substantial additional revenue stream. As the industry looks to build on this success, Jailer 2 will be cited as evidence that Tamil films can compete at the highest level of Indian box office performance, both at home and abroad.
