Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 has bounced back in emphatic fashion at the box office, collecting Rs 24.15 crore net in India on its second Saturday to take its domestic net total to approximately Rs 373 crore and its worldwide gross to Rs 666.30 crore in just ten days.
The action drama, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and released in theatres on October 15, had seen its collections dip on Friday, when it earned Rs 14.50 crore net across India. Saturday's figure represented a jump of 66.6 per cent over the previous day, a recovery that trade observers attribute to strong weekend footfall and positive word of mouth around the sequel's action sequences and ensemble cast.
According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film's India gross collection has now reached Rs 436.80 crore, while its overseas gross stands at Rs 229.50 crore after adding Rs 10 crore from international markets on Saturday. The combined worldwide gross of Rs 666.30 crore places the film within touching distance of the Rs 700 crore milestone, which it could cross in the coming days if the current momentum holds.
The Tamil version remained the biggest contributor on day ten, earning Rs 16.25 crore across 5,545 shows with an occupancy rate of 46.2 per cent. The Telugu version collected Rs 4.40 crore from 1,835 shows at 38.4 per cent occupancy, while the Hindi version earned Rs 2.90 crore across 4,008 shows with 20 per cent occupancy. The Kannada version added Rs 60 lakh from 203 shows, registering 41 per cent occupancy.
In total, the film played 11,591 shows on Saturday, recording an average of Rs 20,835 per show.
The second-Saturday recovery capped a strong opening stretch for the sequel. Jailer 2 opened with Rs 59.70 crore net in India on October 15, followed by Rs 37.10 crore, Rs 47.25 crore and Rs 55.85 crore over the next three days. Collections then stood at Rs 42.35 crore on Monday, Rs 46.80 crore on Tuesday, Rs 28.15 crore on Wednesday and Rs 17.15 crore on Thursday, taking the first-week India net total to Rs 334.35 crore.
The film's worldwide performance has already delivered several milestones. It crossed the Rs 600 crore mark globally within nine days of release, and has now surpassed the lifetime worldwide collection of its predecessor, the 2023 blockbuster Jailer, which earned Rs 604.7 crore. It has also moved past Vijay's Leo, whose worldwide total stands at Rs 605.90 crore, to become one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of all time.
The next target in sight is Rajinikanth's own 2018 science-fiction spectacle 2.0, which reportedly earned around Rs 691 crore worldwide. Jailer 2 is now roughly Rs 25 crore short of that figure, and trade analysts say it could overtake 2.0 to become the highest-grossing Tamil film worldwide if weekday collections hold up after the second weekend.
Continuing the story of its predecessor, Jailer 2 brings back Rajinikanth in the lead role, with several new additions to the cast including Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan and S.J. Suryah. Performances by Yogi Babu and Namo Narayana have also drawn attention, while cameo appearances by Mohanlal, Jackie Shroff and Shiva Rajkumar have remained a highlight for audiences, many of whom have returned for repeat viewings to catch the star-studded moments.
The film's run is also notable for what it says about the enduring drawing power of Rajinikanth, who has headlined Tamil cinema for five decades. The strong second-weekend recovery suggests that the film is attracting family audiences and fans beyond the opening-weekend rush, a pattern that typically sustains longer theatrical runs and helps a film approach the higher milestones.
Trade watchers caution, however, that Saturday's figures should not be treated as a guarantee of continued growth. Weekday collections typically differ from weekend earnings, and the film's pace towards Rs 700 crore will depend on how it performs from Monday onwards. The release of the magnum opus Ramayana on November 5 is also expected to reshape the box office landscape, giving Jailer 2 a limited window to maximise its run before fresh competition arrives.
For the wider Indian film industry, Jailer 2's performance reinforces the strength of the Tamil market and the pan-Indian appeal of star-driven action entertainers released in multiple languages. The film's simultaneous release in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada has allowed it to draw audiences across regions, with the Tamil version leading but the dubbed versions contributing meaningfully to the overall total.
Occupancy figures from Saturday underline where the film's strength lies. The Tamil 2D version recorded overall occupancy of 49.65 per cent, with morning shows at 29 per cent, afternoon shows at 48.15 per cent, evening shows at 56 per cent and night shows at 65.46 per cent, a pattern that shows audiences turning out in growing numbers as the day progressed.
The Hindi 2D version recorded overall occupancy of 24.23 per cent, while the Telugu 2D version stood at 41.42 per cent, reflecting the film's stronger hold in its home market alongside a respectable performance in dubbed versions.
The sequel arrived with considerable expectations, given the success of the first Jailer and the curiosity around how Nelson Dilipkumar would expand the story. The director, known for blending dark comedy with stylised action, has built a reputation for crafting moments that play strongly with theatre audiences, from deadpan humour to crowd-pleasing star entrances.
In Jailer 2, that approach appears to have paid off, with audiences responding to both the returning elements and the new faces in the cast.
Trade analysts will also be watching whether the film can sustain its momentum into the second week, when weekday footfall typically determines how far a big release can travel beyond its opening weekends.
The box office journey of Jailer 2 will be watched closely in the coming week, both for the records it may break and for what it signals about audience tastes in a year that has already seen several large-scale releases. For now, the film's second Saturday has given its makers plenty to celebrate: a 66 per cent jump, a worldwide total beyond Rs 666 crore, and a clear run at becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film ever.
