Mumbai Indians and Mahela Jayawardene Part Ways Ahead of IPL 2027

Mumbai: One of the most decorated partnerships in the history of the Indian Premier League has come to an end. The Mumbai Indians announced on Saturday, October 17, 2026, that Mahela Jayawardene will step down as head coach ahead of IPL 2027, closing the curtains on a ten-season association that delivered three championships and defined an era of the franchise.

The franchise confirmed the development through an official announcement, describing the departure as a mutually agreed decision. Jayawardene, the former Sri Lanka captain, helmed three of Mumbai's five IPL triumphs, and his exit marks the end of one of the longest and most successful coach-team relationships in franchise cricket.

Jayawardene's journey with Mumbai began ahead of the 2017 season, when he took over as head coach. The impact was immediate: Mumbai lifted the trophy in his very first season at the helm, defeating Rising Pune Supergiant in a tense final in Hyderabad. That victory set the tone for a golden run that would follow.

Under his calm and methodical leadership, the franchise went on to win the title again in 2019 and 2020, beating Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals respectively. The 2017, 2019 and 2020 crowns made Jayawardene the most successful head coach in the club's history and cemented his reputation as one of the sharpest tactical minds in the T20 game.

After the 2022 season, Jayawardene moved into a broader role. He was elevated to the position of Global Head of Performance as Mumbai Indians expanded their footprint across overseas leagues, including the SA20, the ILT20 and Major League Cricket. In that capacity, he oversaw the cricketing direction of the franchise's sister teams, working to establish a common philosophy and uniform standards across the entire Mumbai Indians network.

The franchise said that during his tenure in the global role, its wider network enjoyed success on multiple fronts, with title wins recorded by Mumbai Indians Women, MI New York and MI Emirates. The period underlined Jayawardene's influence not just as a dugout tactician but as an architect of the franchise's growing global cricketing empire.

Jayawardene returned to the dugout ahead of IPL 2025, replacing Mark Boucher after what had been a forgettable 2024 campaign. The homecoming brought immediate improvement: Mumbai reached Qualifier 2 in 2025, raising hopes that the franchise was on its way back to the summit of the league. However, the 2026 season proved to be a harsh setback, as the team endured a disappointing campaign and finished second from the bottom of the table.

Reports around the 2026 season also pointed to injuries, availability issues and murmurs of unease within the dressing room, adding to the pressure on the leadership. The franchise did not publicly link the coaching change to any single factor, and the announcement was framed as a mutual decision.

In the official statement, team owner Nita Ambani paid a warm tribute to the departing coach. She spoke of his significant contribution over the years, describing his calm leadership, integrity and deep love for the game, and thanked him for his commitment. She added that Jayawardene would always remain part of the franchise's larger family, reflecting the deep bond built over a decade of collaboration.

Jayawardene, for his part, called his time with Mumbai a very special part of his journey and an experience he would always treasure. He said he left with immense pride in what had been achieved together and would always carry a special place in his heart for the franchise. He thanked the owners, Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani, for their trust, support and friendship over the years, and wished the team every success in the years ahead.

The departure leaves Mumbai with a significant vacancy to fill at a crucial time. The franchise did not name a successor in its announcement, but reports suggest the search is already underway, with several candidates shortlisted and interviews expected to take place soon. Mumbai will need to finalise its new head coach ahead of the retention deadline for IPL 2027, which falls in mid-November.

The timing of the announcement is also noteworthy given a recent change in the franchise's leadership structure. Weeks before the parting with Jayawardene, Mumbai appointed former Rajasthan Royals team director Zubin Bharucha as director of performance, signalling a reshuffle of the backroom setup that oversees the team's cricketing operations.

The rest of the coaching staff remains in place for now. Assistant coach Kieron Pollard and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey continue to be part of the set-up, providing continuity as the franchise transitions into a new chapter.

For Mumbai Indians, the five-time champions, the challenge now is both sporting and symbolic. Jayawardene was more than a coach; he was the steady hand behind the franchise's most dominant period and a key figure in its transformation into a multi-league global brand. Finding a replacement who can combine tactical acumen, man-management and an understanding of the franchise's culture will be among the most important decisions the team makes ahead of the 2027 season.

The franchise's supporters will remember Jayawardene for the silverware, but also for the manner of the success: a team built on discipline, clarity of roles and an unflappable temperament under pressure. Those were the hallmarks of the 2017, 2019 and 2020 triumphs, and they remain the template against which any successor will inevitably be measured.

As the IPL 2027 auction approaches, with the BCCI secretary recently confirming it will be held in Goa in December, Mumbai's new head coach will inherit a squad in need of rebuilding after a bruising 2026. The retention decisions due in November will offer the first glimpse of the franchise's new direction, and the identity of the next coach is expected to be announced well before then.

Mumbai Indians are the joint-most successful franchise in IPL history, with five titles to their name in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. The first two came before Jayawardene's arrival; the next three came under his stewardship. That record makes him not only Mumbai's most successful coach but one of the most decorated figures the league has seen from the dugout.

As a player, Jayawardene was one of Sri Lanka's greatest batsmen and captained the national side across formats, including a famous 2007 World Cup final run. His transition from player to coach carried that same cricketing intelligence into the dugout, and franchises across the world have long sought his counsel.

The change comes amid a wider churn in coaching staffs across the league ahead of the new cycle. Delhi Capitals, for instance, recently appointed former Sri Lanka pacer Chaminda Vaas as their fast-bowling coach, as franchises reassess their backroom teams with the IPL 2027 auction approaching.

The end of the Jayawardene era is, above all, a moment for reflection on a partnership that delivered sustained excellence. A decade, ten seasons and three titles later, Mumbai Indians and Mahela Jayawardene part on a note of mutual respect, with both sides looking ahead to what comes next.
