Night of Horror in Gwalior: Paddy-Laden Truck Ploughs Through Devotees at Sheetla Mata Temple, 12 Killed

GWALIOR: At least twelve people were killed and several others were injured when a truck loaded with paddy lost control and ploughed into devotees gathered near the Sheetla Mata Temple in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, in the early hours of Sunday.

The accident took place at around 1.30 am on a road leading to the temple, which was crowded with pilgrims at the time. According to Gwalior Senior Superintendent of Police Dharmveer Singh, the truck was travelling from the direction of Chhinor when it lost control on a steep stretch where the movement of heavy vehicles is restricted.

The vehicle first broke through police barricades, then ran over devotees who were on the road, before crashing into the outer wall and the gate of the temple, badly damaging both.

"This is a tragic incident where pilgrims were travelling to Sheetla Mata Temple in large numbers," Singh said, describing how the truck, which had been stopped near the barricades, suddenly broke through them, came down the slope and crushed the devotees who were on the road.

The scale of the tragedy became clear as the injured were rushed to hospitals across the city. The Senior Superintendent of Police said that thirty-nine people had been taken to hospital following the accident, of whom twelve had died. Five to six patients were critically injured, many of them with fractures, while the remaining victims had sustained comparatively minor injuries and were receiving treatment.

Two police personnel who were on duty at the spot were also injured in the incident, and their treatment was continuing.

Gwalior Collector Ruchika Chauhan said that ambulances and other vehicles were dispatched to the spot immediately after the administration received information about the accident. She said that around twenty-nine people had sustained injuries and that the injured were undergoing medical examination, including CT scans and X-rays, to determine the exact nature of their injuries and the treatment they would need.

The Collector also ordered an investigation into the circumstances of the crash, particularly into how the truck managed to enter a restricted stretch despite a stopper and a police checkpoint being in place. A team from the Regional Transport Office has been sent to inspect the truck mechanically to establish whether any vehicle fault contributed to the accident and to understand how it veered off course.

The road on which the accident occurred descends from the Chhinor side towards the temple and has a steep slope, which is why the movement of heavy vehicles is restricted there. Police barricades and a checkpoint had been placed on the stretch, particularly in view of the large movement of pilgrims during Navratri. The question of how a fully loaded truck got past these arrangements is now at the centre of the official inquiry.

The Sheetla Mata Temple is one of the prominent places of worship in Gwalior and draws large numbers of devotees, especially during the Navratri festival, when crowds continue to arrive through the night and into the early hours of the morning. On the night of the accident, devotees were present on the road in large numbers, and the truck struck them before hitting the temple structure itself.

Rescue and relief operations continued through the night as the injured were shifted to hospitals. The critically injured patients are under close observation, and the district administration is coordinating their treatment. Officials said that the families of the victims were being informed and that further details about the identities of the deceased would be released after due verification.

The accident has once again drawn attention to the dangers posed by heavy vehicles on steep and restricted stretches of road, particularly around places of worship during festivals when pedestrian movement is at its peak.

The combination of a fully loaded truck, a steep gradient and a crowded road created the conditions for the tragedy, though officials have cautioned that the exact cause will only be established after the mechanical inspection of the vehicle and the completion of the inquiry.

Investigators will now examine several aspects of the incident: the mechanical condition of the truck, including its brakes and steering; whether the vehicle was overloaded; the deployment and alertness of the personnel manning the checkpoint; and whether the barricades in place were adequate to stop a heavy vehicle.

The findings of the RTO team are expected to be crucial in determining whether the crash was the result of a mechanical failure, human error, or a lapse in the enforcement of the restrictions.

Road accidents involving trucks remain a serious concern across the country, and stretches with steep gradients are considered particularly hazardous for heavy vehicles. Traffic regulations typically restrict or control the movement of such vehicles on these stretches, and physical barriers such as barricades and stoppers are used to enforce the restrictions.

The Gwalior accident will likely lead to a review of how these restrictions are enforced around the temple, especially during periods of heavy pilgrim movement.

Officials said that during Navratri, the police and the district administration typically put in place special arrangements around major temples, including barricades, diversions and additional deployment, to manage the surge in pilgrim traffic. The administration is now expected to review whether those arrangements were adequate on the stretch where the accident occurred, and whether the checkpoint was manned at the time the truck passed through.

The accident also highlights the particular risks of night-time movement of heavy vehicles on gradients. Drivers descending steep slopes at night face reduced visibility and longer braking distances, and a fully loaded vehicle that loses control on such a stretch can be almost impossible to stop.

Traffic safety experts have long called for stricter enforcement of restrictions on heavy vehicles near crowded religious sites during festivals, including the use of stronger physical barriers that cannot be breached by a loaded truck.

As the city comes to terms with the loss of life, the focus remains on the treatment of the injured and on the investigation. Officials have said that accountability will be fixed once the inquiry establishes how the truck breached the checkpoint. The district administration has also indicated that safety arrangements on the approach roads to the temple will be reassessed to prevent a recurrence.

For the families of the twelve who lost their lives on a night of worship, however, no inquiry can undo the damage done in those few terrible minutes on the road to the temple.
