Sai Pallavi Is IPS Officer Nithya Reddy In Dhanush-Mammootty Film OM Chapter 1

CHENNAI: The makers of OM: Chapter 1 have unveiled the character played by Sai Pallavi in the upcoming action thriller, introducing her as IPS officer Nithya Reddy, a sharp and experienced investigator at the centre of a mission against red sandalwood smuggling.

The character glimpse, released on Monday, October 26, is the latest in a series of introductions for the film, which is headlined by Tamil star Dhanush and Malayalam superstar Mammootty and is set to release in theatres on November 20. Titled OM: Chapter 1 - Udhiram: The Blood Wood, the film is directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, who previously worked with Sai Pallavi on Amaran in 2024.

In the film, Sai Pallavi plays Nithya Reddy, a former Assistant Superintendent of Police in the Andhra Pradesh cadre who is now an Additional Superintendent of Police in the Central Bureau of Investigation, working with Interpol. She is described in the glimpse as honesty, smartness and experience in a young blood, a phrase that has become a talking point among fans since the video was released.

The action-packed glimpse shows Nithya spearheading the film's titular mission, Operation OM, against sandalwood smuggling, with the aim of protecting Mother Nature.

Nithya's backstory gives the character a personal stake in that mission. She is the daughter of a martyred Indian Forest Service officer from Naidupet, in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district, who lost his life while protecting the forests she is now tasked with defending. That connection, between a daughter and the forests her father died to protect, is presented as central to her motivation, and it distinguishes her from a conventional investigator figure.

She is not merely assigned to a case; she is returning, in a sense, to the world that shaped her family.

The film centres on the smuggling of red sanders, a restricted and highly valuable variety of sandalwood found in parts of Andhra Pradesh. Red sanders smuggling has long been a serious problem in the forests of the region, involving organised networks, international demand and difficult terrain, and it has been the subject of both law enforcement operations and earlier films.

By placing that trade at the heart of a large-scale action thriller, OM: Chapter 1 is tapping into a subject that is both commercially dramatic and rooted in a real environmental and law-enforcement challenge.

Director Rajkumar Periasamy shared the character video on social media, praising Sai Pallavi in warm terms and writing that she never ceases to amaze. He introduced her as Nithya Reddy, IPS, and as the Naidupeta Ammayi, or girl from Naidupet, from OM. Sai Pallavi responded by thanking the director for choosing her again and for giving her the role of Nithya Reddy, adding that she sees a part of herself, an alter ego, in the character.

That exchange, between a director and an actor reuniting after Amaran, has added to the anticipation for the film, particularly among audiences who admired their previous collaboration.

The cast around Sai Pallavi is formidable. Dhanush and Mammootty headline the film, with Mammootty's character, introduced last month on his seventy-fifth birthday, known as Burma Karthikeyan, also referred to in reports as Siya.

The introductory video for Mammootty's character began with a team of international officials stating that they had issued a notice in search of a member of an organised crime network, and showed the actor in several avatars, including that of a politician, with Dhanush just a step behind him in a stylish entrance. Sreeleela plays a pivotal role, and the cast also includes Sanjay Swaroop and Naseeruddin Shah, who makes his Tamil debut in the film.

Behind the camera, the film brings together a strong technical team. Sai Abhyankkar composes the music, Ezhil Arasu K handles cinematography, R Kalaivanan is the editor, and Yannick Ben and Kecha Khamphakdee have choreographed the action. The film is produced by Shraddha Agarwal, Dhanush and Azmat Jagmag under the Wunderbar Films and RTake Studios banners.

That combination of a large cast, international action choreography and a forest-based crime story suggests a film aiming for scale, with the action set not in city streets but in the wooded landscapes where red sanders smuggling actually takes place.

For Sai Pallavi, Nithya Reddy is the latest in a series of roles that have built her reputation as one of Indian cinema's most respected performers. She was last seen in the Hindi film Ek Din, and she will soon be seen as Sita in Nitesh Tiwari's magnum opus Ramayana: Part 1, co-starring Ranbir Kapoor and Yash, which is scheduled for release on November 5 and features music by A R Rahman and Hans Zimmer.

Her line-up also includes director Mani Ratnam's Inji Vellam, co-starring Vijay Sethupathi. Within that busy schedule, OM: Chapter 1 stands out because it places her not in a romantic or dramatic lead but in an investigative, action-oriented role, leading an operation rather than supporting one.

The character glimpse has been received as a statement of intent. Rather than introducing Nithya through glamour or romance, the video presents her through her work: her rank, her transfer from state police to the CBI, her Interpol assignment and her leadership of Operation OM.

That framing reflects a wider shift in Indian cinema, where women officers are increasingly portrayed as central investigators rather than as secondary figures, and where audiences have responded to performances that emphasise competence and conviction over spectacle alone.

The timing of the release also matters. With a November 20 theatrical date, OM: Chapter 1 arrives in a crowded season, following the Diwali releases and competing for attention with other major films. Its makers are clearly counting on the combination of Dhanush, Mammootty and Sai Pallavi, along with the red sanders story, to cut through that competition.

The character reveals, released one by one, are part of that strategy, building familiarity with each lead before audiences encounter them together on screen.

As the release date approaches, more material from the film is expected, including a trailer that will show how the three leads interact and how Operation OM unfolds. For now, the introduction of Nithya Reddy has done its job: it has given audiences a character to remember, a backstory to care about, and a reason to watch a film that promises to combine action with an environmental crime story rooted in Andhra Pradesh's forests.

If the glimpse is any guide, Sai Pallavi's officer will be at the centre of that story, not at its edges.
