The Diwali clash at the Tamil box office has produced a clear winner on the opening day. Suriya's action comedy Scene collected 19.15 crore rupees net in India on its first day, while Nayanthara's Mookuthi Amman 2: Maha Sakthi managed 1.88 crore rupees net, a gap of more than ten times between two films that released on the same Friday.
Both films opened in theatres on 6 November 2026, two days before Diwali, in a crowded festive window dominated by the pan-India release Ramayana.
Scene, a crime comedy directed by Malayalam filmmaker Jithu Madhavan in his Tamil debut, opened on a strong note. According to early estimates from industry tracker Sacnilk, the film collected 19.15 crore rupees net at the Indian box office on its opening day, which translates into a gross collection of 22.25 crore rupees in India. The Tamil version contributed 16.15 crore rupees net from 4,878 shows, while the Telugu dubbed version earned 3 crore rupees from 1,289 shows.
Overseas markets added a further 12 crore rupees in gross collections, taking the film's worldwide gross on day one to 34.25 crore rupees. Exhibitors gave the film a wide release, allocating it 6,167 shows across the country on its opening day.
The opening puts Scene ahead of Suriya's two previous releases this year. Karuppu, which went on to become his career-highest grosser with more than 310 crore rupees worldwide, had opened to 15.50 crore rupees net in India and 28.93 crore rupees globally. Vishwanath and Sons, which crossed 200 crore rupees worldwide, had opened to 15.35 crore rupees net in India and 31.74 crore rupees globally.
Scene has beaten both on day one, making it Suriya's biggest opening of the year and his third release of 2026. The film also stars Nazriya Nazim and Naslen alongside Suriya, and early reports spoke of positive reviews from audiences and critics.
Mookuthi Amman 2: Maha Sakthi, a fantasy comedy-thriller directed by Sundar C and starring Nayanthara, had a far more modest start. According to Sacnilk, the film collected 1.88 crore rupees net in India on its first day, with a gross of 2.15 crore rupees. The Tamil version earned 1.75 crore rupees from 1,881 shows, while the Telugu version contributed 13 lakh rupees from 246 shows.
Its worldwide gross on day one was estimated at 3 to 4 crore rupees, with overseas figures yet to be reported. Cinemas allocated the film 2,127 shows on its opening day, roughly a third of the number given to Scene.
The gap between the two films was stark in every market. In Tamil Nadu, Suriya's biggest market, Scene grossed 10.75 crore rupees against 1.80 crore rupees for Mookuthi Amman 2. Kerala widened the gap further: Scene grossed 5.75 crore rupees there alone, more than double the 2.15 crore rupees that Mookuthi Amman 2 grossed across the whole of India.
Suriya's Telugu dubbed version alone earned more on Friday than Nayanthara's film did across the country. The difference of 17.27 crore rupees in India net collections on a single day tells the story of a one-sided contest.
The advance bookings had pointed the same way. Ahead of its release, Scene sold advance tickets worth 12.59 crore rupees in India, while Mookuthi Amman 2 registered 1.48 crore rupees in first-day advance bookings, selling 97,939 tickets across 281 cities. Trade watchers had expected Nayanthara's sequel to draw Tamil family audiences through same-day bookings on the strength of the original film, a devotional comedy that had released directly on a streaming platform in 2020.
That walk-in audience did not materialise in the numbers the film needed, and its overall occupancy on day one averaged 24.1 per cent.
Both films also faced severe competition for screens from Ramayana. Nitesh Tiwari's big-budget retelling of the epic, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash, had released a day earlier, on Thursday 5 November, and locked down screens across the country. It collected 64.85 crore rupees net on its opening day and a further 48.05 crore rupees on Friday, remaining well ahead of both Tamil releases.
In that three-way contest for screens and audiences, Scene held its own; Mookuthi Amman 2 was squeezed.
For Suriya, the opening is a significant result in a busy year. Three releases in a single calendar year is a heavy workload for a leading star, and Scene's day-one performance suggests his audience has stayed with him through all three.
The film's opening also came in at the lower end of Sacnilk's pre-release forecast of 22 to 30 crore rupees in India gross, and its worldwide total of 34.25 crore rupees was just short of the projected 36 to 44 crore rupees, which suggests the film has room to grow over the Diwali weekend if word of mouth holds.
For Nayanthara, the stakes were different. Trade reports said the sequel's total theatrical business had been estimated at 60 crore rupees globally, with non-theatrical deals covering streaming, satellite, music and Hindi dubbing rights adding a further 93 crore rupees. The film needs to gross around 130 crore rupees to break even, requiring a 65-crore share at the box office.
A day-one net of 1.88 crore rupees in India leaves it with a long climb, and the film will depend heavily on the Diwali holidays and on family audiences arriving over the weekend.
Scene also marks an interesting crossover. Jithu Madhavan made his name in Malayalam cinema with Aavesham, and his move to Tamil cinema with a Suriya-led action comedy was watched closely by the trade. A strong Tamil debut extends his reach beyond Kerala, where his films already command a loyal audience, and it gives Suriya a director whose recent work has been among the most talked-about in South Indian cinema. The film's day-one figures suggest that combination has worked.
The Diwali weekend will now decide how far the gap widens. Scene has the screens, the momentum and the stronger reviews, and it will look to build on its opening through the festival days. Mookuthi Amman 2 needs a sharp recovery to stay in the race. What day one has already settled is the headline of this Diwali contest: in a head-to-head opening, Suriya's film took a clear and commanding lead.
