UltraTech Cement delivered a quarter of solid growth and expanding volumes in the three months ended September 2026, but the market decided to look past the headline numbers. The country's largest cement maker reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 1,493.77 crore for the second quarter of FY27, up 21.4 per cent from Rs 1,231.58 crore a year earlier, as revenue and volumes grew on the back of capacity additions and stronger demand.
Yet the shares came under heavy selling pressure in Monday's trading session, sliding more than 5 per cent from their day's high, as investors weighed a modest miss against analyst estimates, slightly softer-than-expected volume growth and a rise in debt.
The stock hit an intraday high of Rs 11,219 before tumbling to a low of Rs 10,626, a decline of 5.3 per cent from the peak. Around 2:20 in the afternoon the shares were trading 1.9 per cent lower at Rs 10,702 on the National Stock Exchange, with the BSE quote reading Rs 10,685 at 2:10 PM.
The fall pushed the counter close to its 52-week low of Rs 10,325, underscoring the market's disappointment with a result that looked strong in absolute terms but fell short of the street's finer expectations.
Revenue from operations for the quarter stood at Rs 23,295.07 crore, an increase of 18.8 per cent over Rs 19,606.93 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. The top line was largely in line with market estimates of Rs 22,341 crore.
Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation rose 20.3 per cent year on year to Rs 3,721 crore from Rs 3,094 crore, with the EBITDA margin inching up 19 basis points to 15.97 per cent, or about 16 per cent, compared with 15.78 per cent a year ago. Net profit, however, came in below the consensus estimate of Rs 1,556 crore, and that shortfall appears to have set the tone for the day's selling.
Volumes told a story of steady expansion. Domestic grey cement sales volumes grew 13.8 per cent year on year to 35.94 million tonnes from 31.58 million tonnes, while consolidated cement volumes rose 12.9 per cent to 38.22 million tonnes. Even so, the 14 per cent volume growth figure landed slightly below the 15 per cent the market had pencilled in, adding to the sense that the quarter, while healthy, lacked the upside surprise investors wanted.
Another number that drew attention was debt, which increased to Rs 23,500 crore from Rs 21,300 crore in the previous quarter, raising eyebrows about leverage at a time when the company is funding aggressive capacity expansion.
On a sequential basis the quarter was softer, as is typical for the monsoon-hit second quarter. Net profit fell 42.5 per cent compared with Rs 2,599.28 crore in the March 2026 quarter, and revenue slipped 5.5 per cent quarter on quarter. The monsoon season traditionally slows construction activity across the country, which explains part of the sequential dip, and the year-on-year comparison remains the more meaningful one for a cyclical business.
Capacity utilisation improved to 71 per cent from 66 per cent a year ago, a sign that the company's growing network of plants is being put to good use. UltraTech's grey cement capacity now stands at 210.1 million tonnes per annum, comprising 204.7 million tonnes of domestic capacity and 5.4 million tonnes overseas.
The company has an ambitious target of crossing 240 million tonnes per annum of capacity by March 2028, cementing its position as the dominant player in the Indian market.
Commenting on the quarter, Akshay Shetty, Research Analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan, said UltraTech had a steady second quarter with domestic cement volume growing 13.8 per cent to 35.9 million tonnes, even in a quarter hit by the monsoon. He noted that this performance came from new plants, a wider market reach and more sales of premium products, and that higher volumes combined with improved profitability had strengthened UltraTech's position in the market.
The company continued to invest during the quarter. It launched Ultravolt, its wires and cables business, marking a diversification into an adjacent building-materials segment. It commissioned 3.6 million tonnes per annum of greenfield capacity at Petnikota in Andhra Pradesh, along with 1.0 million tonnes per annum added through debottlenecking of existing plants.
In a milestone on the sustainability front, UltraTech became the first Indian company to cross 2 gigawatts of captive green power capacity, commissioning 116.55 MW of wind power in Barmer and 10 MW of waste heat recovery systems, which together meet nearly 48 per cent of the company's current power requirements.
There was also a change at the top of the boardroom. K. K. Maheshwari has resigned as Non-Executive Vice Chairman, effective January 1, 2027, and K. C. Jhanwar will take over the role.
For the first half of FY27, the numbers were encouraging. Net profit for the six months stood at Rs 4,194.94 crore, up 12.2 per cent year on year, while total income rose 17.3 per cent to Rs 47,943.27 crore, reflecting the momentum built through the first two quarters of the financial year.
The sector backdrop remains supportive. India's GDP grew 7.8 per cent in the first quarter of FY27, government capital expenditure rose 15.5 per cent, and the FY27 Union Budget has allocated Rs 12.2 lakh crore for capex, all of which underpin demand for cement from infrastructure and housing. In the long term, these tailwinds favour the market leader, which is why analysts remain broadly constructive even as the stock corrects.
The broader market, however, offered no comfort on Monday. The Sensex crashed more than 900 points and the Nifty fell 1.2 per cent to 22,863, so the selling in UltraTech was amplified by a weak tape. Still, the bulk of the stock's underperformance was stock-specific, driven by the earnings miss and the rise in debt.
For investors, the quarter presents a mixed picture: strong double-digit growth in profit, revenue, volumes and margins on a year-on-year basis, but a valuation that demands perfection. When a stock is priced for a beat and gets merely a steady quarter, the reaction can be swift, and that is exactly what played out in Monday's session.
